Hair Transplant Surgery Basics

Hair transplantation is a minor outpatient surgery that simply relocates healthy hair from the back or sides of the head and placed in the balding area on the scalp. During the procedure, local anesthesia is administered to relieve any discomfort.

The area from which the hair is taken is commonly referred to as the "horseshoe fringe". It is the hair that extends from behind both ears to the back of the head. Usually, the scalp hair of this area for men does not atrophy or loss. Instead they live a long life through, for they are accordingly resistent against hair loss. You must have already noticed that it is on these spots of the head where a man, who has been bald for decades, has still full hair. Photos with Hair Transplant Surgery Procedure

These areas serve as donor region, from where genetically resistent hair follicles are taken and eventually transplanted to the bald areas. In these bald areas, the hair follicles fall out during the following 2- 5 weeks due to the "transplantation stress" only to reappear after a lapse of around 3- 6 months after undergoing a rest phase.

After this rest period, the hair follicles have regenerated enough to begin producing new healthy hair. Thus, on the once bald areas of the head new healthy and strong hair begins to grow.
