Stress affects the hormone balance and it will transmit signals to the hair follicles, the hair follicles will undergo a resting stage. This will result in a decrease of hair's activity on the scalp. During this phase there is no new hair growth. Over the next few months hair will be shed normally but new growth will not occur to take its place. This uneven pattern can cause hair to appear thinner and eventually result in hair loss.

There are three types of hair loss in women due to stress: Telogen Effluvium, Alopecia Aeata and Tri-chotillomania.

1.Telogen Effluvium

The more common type is called telogen effluvium. As much as 70% of your hair can prematurely enter the resting phase. Three months later, these hairs begin to fall out. Then it grows back within 6 to 9 months.

2. Alopecia Areata

Stress is starting to change the balance in your body and cause an abnormality in the immune system. The body's own immune system attacks the hair follicles and disrupts normal hair formation.

Alopecia Areata usually presents as a single oval patch or multiple confluent patches of asymptomatic, well-circumscribed, non-scarring alopecia. Very often it grows back spontaneously by itself but if it hasn't after six months it might be worth considering treatment.

3. Trichotillomania

People with Anxiety have a habit to pull their own hair or rub their scalp and it affects 2 percent of the population. Hair loss due to tri-chotillomania cannot be treated effectively until the psychological reasons are addressed.
